Panama is the southernmost country of both Central America and North America. It is on the isthmus that connects North America to South America and is bordered by Costa Rica to the northwest, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital is Panama City. The earliest known inhabitants were the Cuevas and Cocle tribes, but the were wiped out due to fighting and disease when the Spaniards arrived in the early 1500's.
Panama is divided into 9 provinces. It ranks 118th worldwide on the basis of land size. Panama has a central spine of mountains that form the Continental Divide. The divide doesn't form part of the huge mountain chains of North America and only near the Colombian border are there highlands that are related to the Andes of South America. The spine is the highly eroded arch of an uplift from the sea bottom, in which peaks were formed by volcanic intrusions.
