Israel is in western Asia and is located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan to the east and Egypt to the southwest. Israel is the world's only predominantly Jewish state. It has a population of approximately 7.5 million people of which approximately 5.7 million are Jewish. Israel dates back to biblical times. Despite its small size, Israel hosts a variety of geographical features. The Negev Desert in the south, the Galilee, Carmel and Golan Mountain ranges in teh north. Temperatures vary, as well. Jerusalem usually gets at least one snowfall per year, and coastal cities, such as Tel Aviv or Haifa, have more of a typical Mediterranean climate: hot summers and cool, rainy winters. Rain is rare from May through September. Israel also has scarse water resources, so the country uses technologies such as drip irrigation. It is also one of the leading nations of the world for solar energy use.
Israeli people, on average, consume nearly 350 pounds of fresh fruit per person per year. More than 40 types of fruit are grown and exported. Fruit is served as a snack or dessert.
I have to thank Rachel, from AllRecipes, for the help on this menu. She is the one that told me how to properly make an Israeli/Jewish dinner that is correct. You either serve meat or dairy, but not both, on the same plate. I opted for dairy. The Israeli Salad picture happened to make the front page of the AllRecipes website as one of four best photos for the day I submitted it...that was a first for me and was a totally cool honor. I still have the mint plant 2 months later and it is thriving in my recycled container garden.
