Here are some interesting facts from the country my ancestors came from aboard the coffin ships:
*The RMS Titanic was built in Belfast and it's last port of call before sinking was Queenstown in County Cork.
*Women in Ireland recieved the right to vote two years before American women in 1918.
*A pint of Guinness has less calories than a glass of orange juice or 1% milk with only 198 calories per pint.
*The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest breed of dog in the world.
*Roughly 40% of the population of Ireland reside within 60 miles of Dublin.

Around the turn of the 19th century, the English owned the majority of Ireland's land. They, in turn, rented small plots to Irish farmers. Irish farmers earned about 8 pence a day (a fifth of what they could earn in the New World) so they weren't able to afford modern equipment.
In October 1845, around 75% of Ireland's potato crop was wiped out odue to a blight. Potatoes were the principal food source for the approximate 4 million residents. The Great Potato Famine can be blamed for the deaths of mearly 1 million people over the next 5 years. By 1855, nearly 1 million (approximately 1/4 of the population) people had emigrated to the U.S.A. Life in America was hellish for the Irish immigrants. They weren't afraid of hard work and often took the most dangerous jobs: building bridges, canals and the railroads. The Irish also had to work in deplorable conditions in the coal mines which led to them developing a secret society called the Molly McGuires.
