French Polynesia is a collection of islands in the South Pacific. It's made up of several groups of Polynesian Islands, the most famous being Tahiti, which is part of the Society Island Group. It is also the island with the largest population. The first of these islands to be settled by indigenous Polynesians were the Marquesas Islands in 300 AD and the Society Islands in 800 AD. The Polynesians were organized in loose chieftainships. The islands of French Polynesia have a total land area of 1622 square miles scattered over 965,255 square miles of ocean. There are 130 islands that make up French Polynesia which are divided into 6 groups: Austral Islands, Bass Islands, Gambier Islands, Marquesas Islands, Society Islands, and the Tuamoto Archipelago. Aside from Tahiti, some other important atolls, islands and island groups are: Ahe, Bora Bora, Hiva, Oa, Tahaa and Tupai.
